The books in my hotel room bedside drawer

I was delighted to find in my drawer here at the Westin Prince (Toronto) not only the usual Gideon Bible, but also a copy of The Teaching of Buddha. Not that I prefer one to the other (truth is truth), but it's sweet to have the option. Is both books in the drawer uniquely Canadian? Westin-ian? Toronto-ian?

From a random page opening (which often holds answer to an unformed question in my mind) of The Teaching...:
...even under the best of conditions the mind will bear watching.

ps: wouldn't it be cool to have the Koran in there make up a threesome?

I found exactly the same book in my hotel room in Germany, so it is certainly not limited to Toronto or Canada.

I found the exact same book in my room in Tokyo about 8 years ago, but it was the only book in the drawer.

The nazis felt it right and in accordance with truth to exterminate a number of different ethnic groups during WW2. Was that truth? Is truth truth?

I had the same eperience a few years back staying at the Westin in Chicago. I believe the teachings of Buddha are available at all Westins, along with their heavenly beds :)

I got a chance to read the book on that trip and greatly enjoyed it, would recommend it to all.

Fred - if perception of the truth were the truth, we'd be in deep doo-doo, I'd agree. A better way to say what I said would be - what is, is. - David

One day we might find Getting Things Done in hotel desk drawers -- at least in executive suites!

David,
If you are ever interested in discussing the Bible some more - email me. Like Eric Mack, I am a Christian - no pressure - just throwing out the offer. Have a great day - and thanks for GTD.

In our "guest room" at our house (which we call the Lincoln Bedroom Hotel), we keep a Gideon Bible I picked up at a used book shop (no, I didn't swipe it from a hotel). Marriott Hotels also put copies of the Book of Mormon in their hotels, I think, so we have one there also (one of my favorite books). I will keep my eyes out for the Teaching of Buddha book. I think it is great that people can share things that are important to them in a non-threatening way. Although GTD does not rise to the level of scripture (we await your next book...), by following its guidelines a person may have much more time/ability to contemplate the mysteries and beauties of the universe.

I've just returned from a wonderful business trip to Singapore, Vietnam and Thailand and the "Teachings" were in my hotel rooms in Bangkok and on a personal side trip to Chaing Mai. Keep in mind that Thailand is a Buddhist country.

David,
Thanks for your writings -- I've benefited a lot.
It's clear that you have learned some of your method from your martial arts training. I keep thinking that I am also hearing a Buddhist influence. Would you be willing to comment sometime on this?

I'm in a Marriott in Atlanta and there is no Bible or other sort like that in the drawer. Last night at a Hilton in Falls Church, VA there was a Bible and Conrad Hilton's book (and the same in a Doubletree in Chicago the night before last).

You'd think Atlanta would have a Bible in the hotel. Maybe the Bible belt ain't where I thought it was...

The one place I've seen that book so far was in the Radisson in Japantown, San Francisco. No surprise there, as there was a beautiful temple just down the street, but I am surprised to see its inclusion so far and wide.

It would be interesting to understand all parts of this system. What does the hotel manager think when he accepts the offer from Gideon and the other organisation (I assume the Teachings are provided for free by some sect too)? What do Christians think when they are in a hotel? What do Muslims and others think when they see a Bible kindly provided to them? Can a rational person (atheist or agnosticist) be converted using such a cheap trick? How does availability of a Bible in most hotel rooms change the perception of religion among the public? A lot about this is unclear...

Personally, I would rather have Carl Sagan's Cosmos or something similar placed in a drawer. There are so many life-changing books that are not based on delusions and lies. Why don't people distribute those instead?

Well i'm from Malaysia and coming to think of it just a few weeks ago I was staying in a motel in a small town and to my suprise both this books were nicely placed in the drawer.
