TSOYM

TSOYM - an acronym made up and shared with me as his key learning from today by the father of my client, the CEO of a very high-flying new company in St. Louis, today. "Dad," probably in his late '60's, sat in on the workshop I did with his son and staff (refresher of GTD for many of them who had previously received our Workflow Coaching, plus some neat info re: the DiSC personality profile), and as we were leaving a lovely dinner tonight in Clayton, Tom said: "What I got was TSOYM. I can remember shortcuts like that best. It stands for 'Trusted System Outside Your Mind.'"

Out of the mouths of babes... and dads.

David, your reference to the DISC profile in this post caught my eye. I took this "test" last year, and recently re-reviewed my results in order to compare to those of a new person joining our staff under my supervision this coming week. I find the DISC profile useful, but my complaint would be the apparent assumption that the manager will have a good plan to address the Areas for Improvement cited in the feedback report. Perhaps that's intended to come through the company providing the test facility? In any event, I feel a bit frustrated in reviewing my report that I don't have a good feel for the Next Actions I could implement to make concrete improvements.

I am thrilled to report that I am signed up to attend your Roadmap seminar in Chicago, and perhaps I will hear your thoughts on putting this information to better use there?

Cathy - DiSC stuff reflects how we emotionally respond to our environment. No more or less than any info we have about ourselves and others, to take into consideration as we interact, but not necessarily have actions about. Main thing is, what are you trying to accomplish with them? Then, what's the next action? - David

Hi David, Cathy and all,
I am an avid David Allen fan (Getting Things Done graduate) and an Inscape Publishing Certified DiSC Trainer. This thread obviously caught my attention.
DiSC does indeed measure your behavioral tendencies in relation to your environment. There are several versions of the DiSC report, with varying levels of personalization and details. The DiSC PPSS report offers more specifics related to things such as your approach to managing others, problem-solving approach, time manaqement, etc. It is much more in-depth than the DiSC Classic report which people are often first exposed to in organizational settings. DiSC is designed to give the respondent insight into themselves ... it will not give you specific 'next actions', but will instead give you insight and ask you questions so that you can determine your next actions. The final page of all DiSC reports includes an "Action Plan' designed to help you put your self-awareness from the report into action. Your DiSC consultant/trainer should be able to guide you in this process if you need assistance. I'd be happy to further discuss if you'd like to contact me.
Best wishes for joy and success,
Sharon Wingron
