There's something about a college town...

While I was in Burlington, I drove into town to find a restaurant, and was enthralled, as I usually am, by the ever-same nature of college town energy. The crowded cool corners, the cheaper food joints, the young-and-hip shops, the conforming uniqueness of the kids playing independent, the intense coffee-house conversations... Seems everywhere to always have been, and probably always will be. Amen.

David,

My wife and I got the same vibe the first time we motored through Burlington. Went back for a longer stay last fall about this time and enjoyed both downtown and surrounding countryside, with rolling hills and changing foliage.

Please keep up the great mix of GTD thinking and action and the personal stuff as well. Yours is my favourite blog on the web; it's my homepage and I always wait anxiously to see if you have a new update today.

Thanks,
Don

I would agree with Don about your blog, great stuff. I'm on business in Ca for a few weeks, visiting a different city each week, and have experienced the same thing. I love the coffee shop atmoshere, especially in the North Beach area of San Francisco this week. On to Oakland next week, the weather here is incredible.

Hey David,

Great seeing you back in Vermont. Small towns like Burlington are like tiny ponds where a few good GTD pebbles can ripple from center to shore.

I was glad to hear that you have enjoyed working with small town boards to help carve their vision - we should make this happen again.

If you would like to go large -yet small- scale, the United States Conference of Mayors could http://www.usmayors.org/ can provide you and your team with access to the grassroots of america where your tools should prove invaluable. Let's noodle about it, someday/maybe on my list...

Keep in touch!

That something about college town's is LIFE! Some of it's ingredients are young & older students focused on the future, support-businesses such as coffeehouses/cafes, new businesses always birthing knowing their college customers will always be there, and support-activities for this population. In my area, Pasadena CA, we are fortunate to have several educational/research institutions: Cal-Tech, PCC, Fuller Seminary, an Art College, a Music Conservatory, and even NASA's JPL. While every community may not be able to have higher education instituions, they can strive to have a place where people can feel alive, positive, and wanting to be their best.
