Speaking of good quotes, God, and GTD...

My buddy Andrew Whaley passed this one on, that I hadn't read before:

The enemy often tries to make us attempt and start many projects so that we will be overwhelmed with too many tasks, and therefore achieve nothing and leave everything unfinished. Sometimes he even suggests the wish to undertake some excellent work that he foresees we will never accomplish. This is to distract us from the prosecution of some less excellent work that we would have easily completed. He does not care how many plans and beginnings we make, provided nothing is finished. - St. Francis de Sales

That's a great quote. Something for my keeper file and definitely something to keep in mind more often. Thanks for passing it on.

This quote is too true. I knit for a hobby, and I have way too many unfinished projects and skeins of yarn in my closet. I just saw a pattern for a hooded sweater that I just have to make - however I'm resisting the temptation. I also have to stay out of yarn stores, as the variety of colors and textures always calls to me. I'm going to copy the quote and pass it on to my knitting group.
Thanks for this great website.

Thanks for posting this. As a minister I was aware how much GTD is a particular help to good stewardship and meeting commitments or obligations. However, I was not aware of this insightful quotation. It was good to meet you when you were here in London - hope you enjoyed the book 'Time Mastery'.

I have been reading a bit of Francis de Sales myself, particularly Letter of Spiritual Direction. What insight this man had into a life of seeking God. Thanks David.

Gordon - thanks for the pointer toward more material. Since searching for the title you mention, I came across a further quotation from Francis de Sale which speaks something of the relaxed focus/mind like water approach that GTD teaches:

"I have more than fifty letters to answer. If I tried to hurry over it all, i would be lost. So I intend neither to hurry or to worry. This evening, I shall answer as many as I can. Tomorrow I shall do the same and so I shall go on until I have finished."

Appararently in view of the number of writings/booklets he published, he is the patron saint of journalists - or is that now bloggers!?!

Excellent quote, timeless insight into what hinders lifes and organizations.

Would your friend Andrew be able to share which particular work of St. Francis de Sales the quote is pulled from?

I believe it is from 'Finding God's Will For You', but I am not confident of that.

Thanks David.

You are correct, it is from Finding God's Will For You. That whole chapter is a treasure trove of insights. St. Francis de Sales has a bird's eye perspective of a particular kind that only comes from years of helping people seek God in spiritual direction.
