BlackBerry questions

I have a few questions for you BlackBerry users out there please:

1/ Will all recent models of BlackBerry's allow filing an email on the BB?
2/ Are email folders only created on the desktop and then sync down to the BB?
3/ Are there any limits to the number of folders the BB will show?
4/ Do emails filed in an Outlook personal folder show up on the BB?

Whatever you know and can contribute here I'd appreciate it. I've been running a BB Simulator and have scoured the BB website, but haven't been able to figure these ones out. I'm suspecting it makes a difference in model and server, but I'd love some input on this.

Thanks!
Kelly

Hi Kelly,

Long time GTD user since 1999. Also use Blackberry at work--not preference but its what is offered. MS Exchange Server and Outlook. My blackberry is a 7290 with service through Cingular.

1: Yes, I can save emails to folders on the BB.
2: Not sure; I work through what is set up on our main server. Folders created there show up on the Blackberry
3: Haven't tested
4: No. I extensively use a Personal Folder set and automatically transfer emails to the PST file. Blackberry only shows server based folders. However, it may be due to my settings for work purposes.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Ron. Yes, this helps! Seems like there are many customization options for BlackBerry users.

Hey Kelly,

I have been using GTD since 2003 after attending a Jason Womack presented seminar. I use a blackberry as well, but a newer model than the 7290, I use the 8700g Model offered through T-Mobile. I also happened to work as a BB admin for a little while:

1/ Will all recent models of BlackBerry's allow filing an email on the BB? Yes, in order to file a message it requires approx 4 clicks.
2/ Are email folders only created on the desktop and then sync down to the BB? Folders are only created on the desktop/laptop not on the BB itself. Depending on how your mail is served (exchange server, pop3, etc) when you create that folder using your computer it could be creating it on the server itself, or just in a personal folder that resides on the computer.
3/ Are there any limits to the number of folders the BB will show? No Limits that I am aware of.
4/ Do emails filed in an Outlook personal folder show up on the BB? No, not unless those personal folders are archived on the server somehow.

A good thing to note is that Blackberry's can work in one of three different environments.

Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) Mode: (No desktop redirection, the BES actually handles pulls the email from the exchange server and routes it to the BB device.

Desktop Redirection: Requires a computer to be running with the email client open. As the email arrives the device polls the computer for it and receives it.

Pop3 Mail: Your pop3 mail is routed by Blackberry, and you set it up with them or your mobile service provider.

All of this is kind of simplistic, but it was written rather quickly. Hope it helps. I would love to be able to use task lists as easily on the BB as the Windows Mobile PDAs seem to do.

Thanks John for your responses. Very useful for me to know the overview of the environments. Big thanks.
