A bird's view
I spent last week in Utah, near the amazing Zion National Park. On Thanksgiving Day we took a hike up to one of the peaks where I got a chance to look down on the valley. We climbed about 1,000 feet for this hike. If you look closely you can see the tiny dots of cars down below.
I was also off email for 6 days--always a great experience for me to disconnect from the world that way. Sure enough, despite hundreds of emails upon my return, nothing was so urgent it couldn't wait or be covered by someone else. When I'm in busy mode it can be hard to convince myself sometimes it's OK to unplug. But I don't think there's ever been a time where I've regretted when I have gone off-line and given my brain some breathing room from the day to day grind.

That's a really mean photo to show to someone who's acrophobic. No, really, I had to scroll it off the screen to write this comment and not be distracted. Fantastic view, but best appreciated from about 10 feet from the edge in my book.

Sorry Andy! That's exactly the reaction my mother had. Of course, she's got history with me and heights. I swore to her that skydiving was safe, then proceeded to pummel into a cement runway and break my leg in 3 places.

You are also correct in your comments regarding email. We can disconnect every once in a while.
Some people want to think of themselves as completely indispensable. It scares them to think that someone else could possibly do part of their job.

I just had the same experience of unhooking. Was away from email for a week. Despite some anxiety, the world did not explode. It's good to do sometimes.

Skydiving? What sane, rational person would choose to jump out of a plane that was perfectly capable of landing safely......? :-)
