Project planning Lite

I was wondering what project planning methodology would be best for smaller work projects and personal projects. What I’m after is some sort of format to record the result of the planning phase, something more that an action steps list, maybe some sort of a time grid. Any suggestions?

If you're not familiar with Gantt -charts, take a look at these:

There's also a port for windows mobile for Gantts.
I've used 6-7 different project management tools in my work history and these are what I've found to be the simplest and most functional form of project management.
