This is silly buy I remember my old brother labeler had some tool (forget what) that made peeling off labels (from the backing) easier. Using one's fingernails (male here) is not optimal and there should be easier way.

Suggestions?

Might look at the little spatula's or scraper tools that scrapbookers use to peel off sticky letters from pages of self stick lettering or other embellishments and die cuts from cutting machines like the Cricut and the Silhouette. I have a Cricut spatula and also a Creative Memories multipurpose tool that works well.

Some label tape comes pre-slit on the back so you can just bend it and it is easy to peel off. That's what I use.

Otherwise, here is a tool like you described.
