I posted about this a couple of years back. It seems the first two GTD books are still not available yet on Kindle in Australia. Any chance this could move off the Someday/Maybe list at the next weekly review ?

Hi Michael,

I will ask David's publisher if they have any information about this and report back if they do.

I'd like to second the request. I would have bought the books this evening if they had been available for Kindle in Australia. I'd rather have e-books than physical -- just for the portability and ease of access.

Thanks.

Does anyone know what is in this summary (http://www.amazon.com/Summary-Getting-things-David-ebook/dp/B006RIODCU/ref=sr_1_9?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1332847681&sr=1-9) for Kindle ?

I downloaded the sample but I couldn't tell if it was going to be just an intro or a summary of the processes.

Thanks - Michael

OK I gave in and clicked buy. It looks like a good summary of both the reason for doing GTD and the processes involved. A useful reminder to have with me. And downloadable downunder !

I've not heard back yet from David's publisher on this yet (why no Kindle version of Getting Things Done in Australia yet). It usually takes some digging to research how publishers in other countries are handling these kinds of things. But I'll be sure to post when I have more info from them.

The Harry Potter books are out on Kindle if that helps :-)

Still no word. Sorry! I'll ping them again.

Thanks. Appreciate your persistence.

I don't think that Kindle sales into Australia would greatly harm any publisher: local book-stores don't seem to stock the books anyway! The paperback is listed as 'out of stock' at one major local store, while another quotes delivery times that strongly suggest that any order will be filled from USA stock.

I do not think it is reasonable to expect rational thinking from publishers and other media outlets. They actively promote piracy by restricting legal availability of copyrighted material.

Hi,

Any news yet on this subject?

Thanks.

So sorry Richard. I've contacted the publisher twice and they've not been able to get an answer about this from who they need to contact about Australia versions.

Sorry!

Well, I gave up and bought the books from Amazon. If the publisher was attempting to protect its local (Oz) subsidiary (by preventing Kindle sales to Australian Kindle owners), they failed. I'm disappointed that I had to buy paper books -- but at least I have them.

Now I just have to find time to read them. (Joke.)

Just bumping back up to the top in case there is any news :-)

I think sending bits to Australia is too expensive.

It's downhill what's the problem :-)

Hi Michael,

David's US publisher has not been able to track this down with the Australia publisher. But I did just write directly to the Australia publisher for you. It's a general customer service email, so I don't have high hopes on a reply, but it's worth a shot. You may want to write too: customer.service@penguin.com.au

Penguin Australia replied:

Hi Kelly,

Penguin Australia only holds the publication rights to David’s third book Making It All Work in our market. To make David’s two other ebooks available for sale in Australia you’d need to talk to Penguin USA whom I assume hold world rights.

Kind Regards,

Chris Grierson

So, I'm stumped, as Penguin US said Australia owned these rights.

Thanks for chasing this down Kelly. It seems very strange that you guys can't get my money because Penguin can't sort what is going on. :-(

That's the problem with penguins and other lemurs.

How can a publisher say that he cannot sell the goods in a given country because of piracy? Or some other ridiculous reason?

What can customers do when the goods are not available legally? Steal it? It is certainly much easier to steal than to explain something to a penguin. :-)

This situation was my very own experience in Poland (software, music, books, movies). It was (and sometimes still is) very frustrating when you want to pay but you are not allowed to and you are called a potential thief.

I thought I'd bump this up. There doesn't seem to have been any change on the Amazon Kindle store that I can see since I posted this last year.

Is it worth asking again Kelly ?

Thanks - Michael

I'm afraid I got nowhere on this either, after multiple emails to Viking/Penguin. Sorry!

The Australian title of Getting Things Done is "How to Get Things Done"
see: http://www.davidco.com/getting-things-done/international-editions

Amazon now sell the kindle version of that name for 50% more than the price of the US version.
US Kindle Edition $12.99 USD
AUS Kindle Edition $19.29 AUD (~20.23USD)
http://www.amazon.com/How-Get-Things-Done-ebook/dp/B00B5KPVQM/ref=tmm_kin_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1365542478&sr=1-1

It isn't available through Apples iBook store.

You can purchase the ebook directly through penguin Australia for AUD $17.99 (~18.89 USD)
http://www.penguin.com.au/products/9781742538709/how-get-things-done

I bought this one (not wanting to pay the highest price). The DRM protected version is hard to get going. You need to register with Adobe digital editions and find a computer or ipad app that can log in to Adobe's service so that you can then read it.
http://www.adobe.com/au/products/digital-editions.html

You need to install the Adobe Editions software on Mac / Windows PC, then register the purchase and convert the downloaded file into a DRM signed eBook. (Penguin Books don't tell you any of this.) Then you need to find a reader that will open the eBook:

List of devices:
http://blogs.adobe.com/digitalpublishing/supported-devices

I already had the "Readmill" reader app on my iPad, and even though it isn't listed in the supported devices, it could open the eBook after signing in to Adobe's servers with my new Adobe account.

I'm very technically proficient and I found this a very difficult process to go through. It's a shame that a legitimate purchase is **so hard**.

I would not recommend going down the Penguin books eBook path. It is painful.

If the publishers just made it available on Amazon for less than ridiculous exchange rate and iBook store, it would be much easier. While trying to figure out how to do all this, I found several sites in Russia where I could download a pirated PDF of the book.

My preferred option would the Apple iBook store at a reasonable price. (ie: parity pricing with US product + 10% GST would be ideal). But I guess that's in the hands of the Australian publisher isn't it?

Thanks Matt that's very interesting. Have you seen that Australian edition in a bookshop here ? It looks like it is just a Kindle edition. As it's recently published I guess it might be the answer to whatever arcane copyright or licensing problem caused the GTD kindle book to not be available in Australia. But the price is crazy.

I haven't seen it in a bookstore. I specifically wanted it on my iPad so I can read it wherever I am without having to carry a book with me.

Searching on the Penguin Books site, they do have a paperback edition:

Good luck,
Matt.

OK I'll keep an eye out in the book shops. Not that I go in them much anymore :-(. Thanks again for pointing this out. I can tick this off my list !
