I’m getting overwhelmed by music CD’s. Any handy storage tips or gadgets to keep them all organized? Or alphabetized without having to reshelve the whole collection each time you get a new CD? Any tips, ideas or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

Rip them all.. store on PC / iPod / etc. Then put them away where you'll never see them again.

I agree completely. I spent a few months ripping all my CDs but it was worth it. iTunes works as an excellent databse for organizing and listening to your music. Stash all the CDs in a closet!

Put your CDs in a database, with a numerical label on each one. Don't try to organize them on the shelf -- use the database to find a specific CD.

For example, I've put my CD collection in a mySQL database. Each CD is labeled with a numerical tag (1 through 653). The CDs are not organized in the shelving system. I put together a simple PHP web interface to search through the collection. You could use the same idea with local database, if you didn't want a web front-end.

If I want to find a specific CD, I do a search -- for example, I might search on "Metheny". The database returns all of the Pat Metheny CDs in my collection -- with the corresponding numerical index so I can quickly find the actual CD. When I buy a new CD it just takes the next numerical number that is available (654) and I don't have to shuffle the CDs around on the shelf to try and fit the new CD into a "Jazz" for example.

My simple solution, only having about 100 CD's, is to always move the one I'm listening to, to the front.

In this way I usually only have to go through the first 20 CD's before I find the one I want to listen to (I listen to 20% of my CD collection 80% of the time).

A shoebox is the ideal size for cd's. Very easy to sort through, and a plastic shoebox will withstand heavy use and is stackable. Inexpensive and handy.
