    Default Appending to PALM memos

Does anyone have a trick for appending to a large Someday/Maybe List on the run?

I have heard that you cannot append PALM memos that are over a certain length. Can anyone help me out to confirm this?

My first idea was to have an active list and an archive list, so that the most current list would be appendable. I would really like to append my SDMB lists on the run, but I dont want to lose any of my information. Thanks!

Palm's built in memo application does have limitations. It's 4K per memo or around 800 words.

    2 possible solutions:

1] Create a SDMB category and then add your entries.

2] 3rd party memo application ... find a memo application that does not have the limitation. I do not have any recommendations on this, though a search of the Palm site or similar will likely turn up options. Just make sure that you can sync to your PC and have access to the memo's.

Actually, this depends on the Palm device. Newer Palms have upped the size limit to 32K (about 6,500 words). Check the manual for your specific device to find out the limit.

That being said, I think that, if I was using the Memo Pad for Someday/Maybe items, I'd create one memo per item -- with space to append notes, brainstorming, URLs, etc -- rather than appending them all into a single memo.

    Smile Thanks!

Thank you both for the great ideas. I may need to be considering restructuring the lists in question.... I am obsessed with books and movies... so when someone recommends anything I throw it on my MOVIES TO SEE MEMO under the SDMB CATEGORY, same for books. But since I would say that these are significant for my life perhaps they DO deserve their own category. Do both of you structure your PALM notes like this? Any hints or tips that have worked for you guys?

    Thanks again,
    Erik

To expand on that, what I use is a category under Memos that is "Someday / Maybe" If I have an ideas with a lot of language, then I add it as a memo in this category. If I have a brief thought, then I put it into a "catchbin memo" that has a lot of these disconnected thoughts in it.

Tammy, thanks for the update on the palm memo limitation. Had a palm for so long I've just internalized the original limitation.

gtderik, I go the category route and create one memo per thought for most items. So in your case a movie and book category would be worth while. Then simply create a new memo each time you come across a movie or book.

Your alternative would be to look at a database program. There are a number out there (again no specific recommendations, but search). This option would give you more power particularly on the processing end. Search by author, theme etc.

    Default Documents to Go

    ReBuild,
Thanks, I like the Movie and Book categories because it would allow me to quickly enter in information. Another idea I just had when you said "Database" was that my Tungsten E2 came with Documents to Go. This would allow me to create a movie database, which is also exportable as a full Excel file.

Wow, thanks for helping me flesh this out guys!

I used to keep all my lists on my Palm (Treo 600). I never ran out of space in a Memo or To-Do.

I did hit the 15-category limit a few times, but I always had one or two unused categories I could delete at that point.

I have monster lists of movies, books, and web-related things to look in to "Someday."

I currently have maxed out the 15 categories in Memos and pretty close in Tasks. I have tweaked and experimented after originally writing this post- I post individual memos in categories now... It is quicker, and much easier to process on the fly when I am away from the computer. Some memo categories include LISTS, PASSWORDS, ACCOUNTS (#'s etc), AFFIRMATIONS, and SDMB.

I really appreciate the feedback guys. Thanks.

Default You need to try MemoLeaf

If you use Memos a lot, and have large number of them, you really owe it to yourself to look into MemoLeaf (Redwood-Creative.com). The the options for memo use expand enormously by using it, and the speed is simply wonderful.
