To manage the flow of life and work, nothing is more practical than sturdy stacking trays at your desk area. No matter how digital your world becomes, you will always have paper and physical articles that need to be collected, processed, and organized; today’s mail, receipts from a recent trip, manuals that came with the new copy machine, notes from a meeting… it’s all fair game and needs to be put into a trusted collection system for processing. A principal task in any office or home is to ensure a simple but highly functional operating base with clean desk top, a file rack, a paper pad, pen and three or more trays.
There are no better tools than durable, three-sided trays for keeping miscellany organized and flowing smoothly. Because they represent such central gear in the workflow “cockpit” both visually and psychologically, they deserve to have a look and feel that represents total quality. As simple an object as it is and as small as these distinctions may seem, we have discerned certain features of a stacking tray that make a big difference.
First, it needs to stack. It also needs to be modular (so you can stack 2, 3 or even 4). It needs to be deep enough for at least a days worth of “stuff” and should be sturdy, to handle multiple heavy documents but sleek enough with a minimal footprint. Ideally it should be elegant enough to enhance rather then distract from your visual aesthetic and needs to have the long side opening forward with a flush edge on the front with only a single piece of paper noticeable from all sides. It should be easily cleaned.
